The story of Tea growing in South India dates back to 1832 when Dr. Christie, a British officer started experimenting with growing tea plants in Nilgiri hills. The earliest record of commercial planting in Kerala was in Peermedu during 1875. By 1889, tea cultivation in large scale caught up in Munnar & Wayanad with the establishment of Plantation behemoths like Harrisons & Crossfield (Now Harrisons Malayalam Ltd) & KannanDevan Hills Produce Limited. Since then tea cultivation grew in leaps and bound and is now home to some of the world’s finest tea.
Harrisons Malayalam is now the largest producer of tea in South India with more than 6000 hectares under cultivation spread over 12 estates with annual production of 12000 MT of tea. Part of the RPG Group, the company has a rich 150 year legacy of excellence & has been recognized as one of the Great Places to Work.
